“Byen i Parken” (The city in the park) is Hjør­ring’s new excit­ing quar­ter that connects the city center and the nearby park “Chris­tians­gave”. The concept has been clear from the start: the neigh­bor­hood should both open the park to the city and open the city to the park.
In 2019, BJERG Arkitek­tur won the munic­i­pally offered project and land sale compe­ti­tion for the construc­tion of the new district in the middle of Hjør­ring — in collab­o­ra­tion with Arne Ander­sen Vrå and BY+LAND. In 2021, the first stage was ready, and in the summer of 2022, the construc­tion of the second stage started.

We create the rela­tion­ship between city and park with vari­ous measures: the loca­tion of the 8 point houses maxi­mizes connec­tions, path systems clearly show the connec­tion and open and public spaces between the point houses invite every­one “inside”. With differ­ent plant­i­ngs in the court­yard of the urban space, the park’s flora is also drawn into the new district. We have there­fore focused on nature being part of resi­den­tial areas and part of the sustain­able cities of the future.

RESPON­SI­BLE BUILDING

In the project, we have recycled bricks from the town's old public school "Vestre Skole".
The houses are designed compactly - this means that surfaces are reduced to minimize heat loss and energy requirements. The heat loss is also reduced, as the homes are primarily oriented to the south, just as the location is also carefully balanced minimal shadowing.

AN INDE­PEN­DENT DISTRICT

“The city in the park” contains 8 resi­den­tial blocks of 4–6 storeys, hous­ing 137 homes of vary­ing size and type. The focus has been on creat­ing a neigh­bor­hood with an inde­pen­dent iden­tity in compar­i­son to other areas in Hjør­ring.
At BJERG, we have an office on one of the ground floors where we every day can enjoy the beau­ti­ful surround­ings from large windows.
